Organizations are operating in a world of extremely high levels
of complexity driven by the realities—the benefits as well as
the challenges—of newly emerging technologies. That message
came through clearly from the 884 chief executive officers
(CEOs) across 67 counties and 19 industries we interviewed
for the 2013 IBM study, “Reinventing the rules of engagement:
CEO insights from the global CEO study.”
For many years, our studies showed that CEOs consistently identified market forces as the biggest driver of change. But in 2012, CEOs for the first time placed technology at the top of the list of issues they believed would exert the strongest influence on their organizations and strategy. In 2013, CEOs again ranked technology first: they believe that the impact of mobile, social, cloud and analytics technologies on their organizations will be profound.
